Search Engine Friendly Web Design and Website Construction

best SEO company
website construction

There are about as many different theories, ideas, and beliefs about how a website can be designed and developed / programmed as there are theories behind search engine marketing. Because we are a search engine marketing company first, our primary goal is to ensure that your website is able to be optimized in the first place and ensure that visitors stay once they've found your website, second. Having a website that is flashy and beautiful is great. It is the equivalent to having a magnificent resort getaway on an island in the middle of the ocean with possibly no way of knowing about it or not having any means or of getting there.

Similarly, a website built in flash like Cartier.com without a mirror HTML site is great because it has an effect that cannot be matched with traditional website languages. However, if your business is not on the same level as Cartier this may be a problem. Because search engines still have a hard time reading flash, most of the content on the website will most likely not be read, especially if text within the flash file is converted from text to objects, which flash designers will usually do. Because flash websites are generally one very large file, search engines, specifically Google, will discount the entire site because they see the entire website as simply the home page, whereas the of size of which, exceeds their limits.

Usually homepages that are extremely large are either link farms, spammer websites, or websites from China or India using "black hat" or unethical search engine marketing techniques to cram as much content as possible onto their homepages.

Remember, we are not called Search Engine Partner, for no reason. We understand that you want your site to be as attractive as possible and we understand that you want to rank highly within the search engine results. The two are not, however, mutually exclusive. Most other search engine marketing companies will tell you that you will need a new HTML website built from scratch if your website is flash. We, however, understand where your business is coming from and can still rank a flash website by utilizing some of our proprietary techniques as well as simply building a mirror HTML site specifically for the search engines, which the general public will never see.

This is just one of the many "white hat" ethical tactics we will employ in a search engine friendly web design or development campaign whether it is a design and development project from scratch or simply a redesign with some "Web 2.0" elements, while also repairing and updating the "backend" coding of a website to ensure that the site is W3C complaint.

Website Construction and the W3C

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Director of the W3C and inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW) has set the standard for website design. These Recommendations are one of the single most influential factors in Google's new search algorithm. According to our former engineer from Google, if a website is not following W3C standards, it is not a proper website and should be ranked as such.

All websites will also conform to accessibility standards mandated by the W3C and any specific countries laws and customs.

Website Construction from Scratch

There are several steps that go into constructing a website and they generally fall in the following order:
1. Website Address / Domain Name Registration and trademarks:
Our first step will be to register your domain name. With more and more websites being registered at an exponential rate, less and less domains names or website addresses are still available. Think of a website address as a street address. .coms and .nets are prime real-estate because they will generally be the only sites to come up in search engines like Google and there are not many that are still available. Chances are if you have not trademarked your company name, someone has already registered it as a website and even if you have a trademark, someone probably has anyway. The good news is that if you already have a trademark, through our connections with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), our legal team can order their hosting provider and/or registrar to hand it over. If you don't have a trademark and your company's name has already been registered, rest assured that through our Corporate Identify and Branding / Logo Design teams, we will find the right name for your business and register a trademark if you so choose.

2. Corporate Identify and Branding / Logo Design:
Using the Gold's Gym logo as an example; this is the type of logo that can be converted to the web and print fairly easily. However, many logos can't be converted. Some are not in the correct "dots per inch" configuration for the web or print or vice-versa. Often times when converting a logo from web to print the logo will tend to become "pixilated" or fuzzy or appear to be a combination of many small square boxes. This has to do with the actual format of the image. That is why our web designers are experts in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. If you already have a logo, we'll ensure that it is converted properly for web and print and if we're building one from the drawing board you can be assured it will be in the correct format from the get go, (one of the many benefits of having a full design department within each of our divisions at Search Engine Partner). As part of your corporate identity package, we will ensure that we develop a uniform brand across all multimedia and print platforms including web, print, and outdoor advertising.

3. Graphics Design:
Our next step will be to design the look and feel of your website. We will transform the vision we developed of your company through our graphics designers to an online form. You will be allotted three (3) revisions of this design.

4. Search Engine Friendly Web Design and Development / Programming:
Once we know how your website will look, it is up to our programmers to ensure that the design is feasible and can be made search engine friendly while conforming to W3C standards.

Web Browser Compatibility

Studies show that most web users still use Internet Explorer version 6 to surf the web.  The second most popular platforms are Internet Explorer version 7, Firefox versions 1-3 as well as Internet Explorer 6. A minority of surfers also use Internet Explorer version 5, Google Chrome, Apple Safari 4, Opera, and mobile web browsers. That means we must ensure that your website is able to be viewed properly on all of these platforms. Sometimes this will require us to deviate from W3C recommendations, especially in setting out table pixels and percentages in XHTML.
Search Engine Partner is also a member of the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA).

Display Resolutions

Another important factor in search engine friendly web design is ensuring that your website will be able to be viewed properly on all display devices and monitors. Taglines and "calls to action" should typically appear above the scroll point on a web page, similar to the "fold" in print advertising. Depending on whether the viewer has a widescreen monitor or traditional one, can make a huge difference.

Standard Displays

There are two primary types of monitor displays used (including TV displays). The standard aspect ratio continues to be 4:3, which means that for every 4 metrics of vertical space, there will be 3 horizontal. A 4:3 display is recommended for businesses and is especially search engine friendly, since more information can be fit on a page.

Resolution - Aspect ratio (1999-2006)
1024x768 4:3 MOST COMMON
1152x864 4:3
1280x960 4:3
1400x1050 4:3 OPTIMAL
1600x1200 4:3
2048x1536 4:3
3200x2400 4:3
4000x3000 4:3
6400x4800 4:3

Widescreen Displays (2006-Present)

A not so new trend in personal displays are 16:9 widescreen for TVs and 16:10 for computer displays. Widescreen is great for design software, especially Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and for watching movies; however, it is not advised for all websites. Websites that may have an audience with widescreen displays are advised to split the site up into two sections; above the scroll and below the scroll, similar to the fold in newspapers. It is actually the exact same premise as the "fold" in advertising. What is above must catch the viewers' attention, while what's below must have a "call to action."
