Web 2.0 Design and Development

What's the difference between web 2.0 design and development?

The terms web 2.0 design and website development are so often used interchangeably that few realize that these are two extremely different concepts. However, it is important for one to understand the differences between web 2.0 design and website development in order to create a well designed and developed website.

Usability Factor
Website design involves creation of aesthetically pleasing, fine looking websites with user friendly features, while web development involves making websites that carry out certain functions. In this, functionality is more important for web development in creating interactive components for online users.

In the 90s, the Web resembled an outdated phonebook. But now, the Web resembles more of a style portfolio. This is due to creative web designers who see style as a necessity and come up with boundary breaking, ever trendy styles to enhance a site's visual appeal constantly. Style is like eye candy for website developers because their focus is on ensuring user friendly features on the website to simplify the experience for the online user.

Technical Requirements
For website design, it is essential for the designers to appreciate the importance of color use, be properly trained in XHTML, be aware of visual aspects of website marketing and have keen understanding of what looks appealing on the online realm. But they are generally not focused on coding or ‘behind the scenes' aspect which is integral for web development. The web developers have to focus on functionality and programming. Their focus is to provide coding server side applications, e-commerce transactions, and databases and search engine marketing that is efficient.

Additional Programming Technologies
Unlike web designers, web developers must have strong awareness of using additional programming technologies to balance the code that function behind the scenes. This means that the design should be displayed in a streamlined way, using the latest Internet and programming technologies.

Organic Search Engines Thrive on Development, Not Design
When there is a choice between an engaging web 2.0 design of the highest aesthetic beauty and a well implemented website development marketing strategy, it is the latter that wins hands down and not design. Design is important but functionality is more important especially to optimize opportunities for small and medium size websites where the focus is functionality of commerce stores. Also, it is functionality that ushers the best possible opportunities for a website to be ranked well in Google.

Design Is Easier Than Programming

Lastly, there are several web page editors that are known to be extremely user-friendly such as Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash CS5 as well as other smaller suits like NetObjects Fusion 11. This lets amateurs and beginners attempt designing the web pages on their own. As a result, the design aspect has become far easier and simplified while the level of skills required for programming is such that amateurs cannot attempt it on their own.

The difference between web 2.0 design and development may be many, but they both must go hand-in-hand for any website to function well and look good.

web 2.0

We look at web 2.0 design as an aspect to the overall objective of website development. If you haven't noticed by now, there are hundreds of thousands of websites that "appear" flashy and attractive. They are very graphically intense and many of them are completely developed using Flash. Generally speaking, there's nothing really wrong with this if you intend to receive all web traffic through links on other sites or advertising. Because these sites are notoriously graphic-intense and flash-driven, Google cannot search images or most flash animation and therefore cannot adequately rank content. This inevitably means the website will not be found or found dozens of pages after a keyword search.

With regards to website design, there is nothing wrong having a creative design, even using flash animation, as long as the design or flash animation doesn't infringe on the content or text that is available. Take for instance our website. A clean, professional design with a little bit of flash and plenty of room for content. We "designed" the site for this purpose because we "developed" it as well.

Our development process is to design a site in a manner that best reflects your corporate image, but that also provides the best method of searchability and visibility. By this, we mean your site can easily be indexed by Google and is visible on all browsers and on all computers. Not every design firm does this, but it is crucial to the success of any website.

This "development process" also includes the site navigation, management of content and the tools we choose to use in developing the website. For instance, if you look at the code behind our site, you won't find any short cuts such as multiple groupings of the code for a space ‘ '. These spaces were never meant to be used as a method of design, yet for years practically everyone has used them with tables to "hold together" the website. We now design all of our websites in CSS. CSS is the preferred method of "holding together" the website and stylizing the website, especially because it makes it easy for search engines to read the content and minimizes the amount of code on each page. With every website we design and develop, we will spend a large amount of time thinking through the best process to keep your site design attractive and fresh, but effective and search engine friendly.

Re-Development

Most of our current clients start off with a search engine marketing package. As part of the package, we promise to rank the website on the first page of a search engine result like Google no matter what it takes. Often times that involves reconfiguring the "backend" coding of a website; including META titles and description (where applicable) tags, title, header, and image alt attributes, among others. (You'll find that most of our competitors have a standard proposal that includes forcing you to allow them to insert "Meta tags" even when they might hurt you (See Google Universal Search Algorithm). We sometimes find that a website was so poorly built in the first place that it simply cannot be repaired. In these instances it will be necessary for us to re-develop the "backend of a website." By the backend we do not mean the content management system, if there is one, or admin section of a website. We literally mean the language that produces the result within a web browser.

Backend Design

Web 2.0 Re-Design

The re-design of a website has more to do with the "frontend" esthetics of the website itself. It is how the website appears to visitors. As a search engine marketing company we understand how important it is to have a website that conforms to the W3C standards and that is search engine friendly. However, we also understand that not being able to keep visitors once the have arrived is just as much of a problem as attracting them in the first place (You will probably never hear another SEO firm admit that). That is how web languages like flash were invented in the first place. In fact, the only language that is approved by the W3C is XHTML, although many server-side and client-side languages like PHP, Java, and CSS will produce an output in XHTML, provided they are configured correctly. For more on this see the Development section below.

The design aspect is strictly changing out the overall layout of a website that may include the architecture of the website itself. By architecture, we're not referring to construction, but the pages contained within the website and the like. Specifically, how pages relate to each other while insuring that all pages within the website point back to the home page, so the search engines will be able to tell what the home page is. The second most referenced page within a website will probably become an indented result, especially in Google's new search algorithm. That is why it is so important to have the right design when building a website and if you already have a site, don't worry; IT'S NOT TOO LATE. We can still go in there and make necessary changes and adjustments, so your website will be able to convey your corporate image.
